Move data over from Mint to Monarch

Intuit just announced that they will be shutting down Mint, the popular personal finance app, by January 1st, 2024. 

You can export your transactions from Mint into a CSV format which you can import into Monarch in comma-separated value (CSV) format. This can be helpful if you are considering Monarch as a Mint alternative and need to move your data over.

Please Note: It is not possible to undo a CSV import, so please take care to prevent duplicates by removing them from the synced account.

Importing multiple accounts

If you have more than 1 account you would like to import or, in particular, if you are importing data from Mint we recommend using the multi-account importer. It can be found in the "add account" screen: 

If you are importing directly from a Mint CSV file everything will be mapped to the appropriate fields in Monarch without needing to open or edit the file. If you wish to make your own CSV by combining multiple data sources before importing the format needed are these 9 columns in this order (CSV field = Monarch field):

1. Date = Date
2. Description = Merchant
3. Original Description = Original Statement
4. Amount = Amount
5. Transaction Type = ignored since amounts are used instead to determine credit/debit
6. Category = Category
7. Account Name = Used to map the multiple accounts
8. Labels = Tags (not yet supported)
9. Notes = Notes

Step 1

The first step you will see after uploading your file is a way to clean up your Tags. You will see a list of Tags from your file and you can choose which ones to bring over to Monarch.

Step 2

The second step is to map your Mint categories to Monarch categories.

The next step is to map your financial accounts from the Mint file to financial accounts in Monarch. If you do not have your accounts setup in Monarch yet you may choose to add a new manual or synced account when importing or ignore an account from the CSV entirely. 

Step 4

You will then choose if you want to prioritize your Mint data or newly synced data. Choose the option to prioritize Mint data to keep your transactions exactly as they are in the file.

Step 5

You will see a spinner as the file is processing. This can take a few minutes. Please do not close the tab.

Step 6

You'll see a confirmation of what was imported and what you can do next.

Now, all the transactions that you imported from Mint will be in Monarch 🎉.  You can import all your Mint account balance history at once. If you use our Mint import flow you'll see an option for account balances. You can use our Chrome extension to get the files out of mint.
